“During the campaign against the Soviet Union he led the Armee that broke through the Stalin Line along the Lithuanian and Latvian-Soviet border and then thrust ahead to Lake Ilmen. Over a succession of brilliantly led battles he destroyed much larger enemy forces south of Lake Ilmen. His Armee then had to fight particularly hard during the subsequent defensive battles since the winter of 1941/42. A portion of his troops were encircled in ‘Fortress Demyansk’. Extremely difficult tasks had to be completed in the 12 months of combat up until the time when the protruding frontline salient was finally evacuated, and Generalfeldmarschall Busch was able to master these through his skillful and energetic leadership. His name is inseparably connected to the difficult battles to restore contact with the encircled units and then conduct numerous defensive engagements south of Lake Ilmen, battles which will go down as glorious chapters in the history of the German Army.”
