Farm The Victory

The remote farm of the De Vries family housed people in hiding and KP members during the war. Son Folkert de Vries: ,,Wy wiene in trochgongadres. To the safolle time kaam der wer in boat foar de wâl mei in protsje minsken dy't slice ha moasten. Der wiene altyd wol flechtelingen en ûnderdûkers by ús yn'e hûs.'' (We were a transit address. Every so often a boat came ashore with a group of people who needed shelter. There were always refugees and people in hiding. us at home).

Early on November 21, 1944, five German soldiers from the Zoll (Grenzschutz) from Drachten raided the farm. The brothers Jan and Marten were milking when four Germans entered the barn. The brothers hurried to the front house with tram striker Gerardus Wagenaar, who had gone into hiding on the farm. ,,Dútsers, ferried'', they shouted to warn the still sleeping KP men. The soldiers shot both brothers and Wagenaar dead. A second tram striker quickly managed to hide. The shooting also cost the life of the commander of the Germans. His subordinates felt so much besieged by the KP'ers that they took to the hare's path. Later the Germans returned in much larger numbers. The residents had already fled. The occupiers took the cattle and everything else of value and set the farm on fire. The farm De Oerwinning was rebuilt in 1948 near the original place.
