The "Irenemonument" Den Haag
(Netherlands, the - South Holland - Den Haag)
This monument is the liberation monument of The Hague and consists of a trellis which symbolizes the war with five birds in their likewise symbolic flight upwards towards freedom. The lowest bird is entangled in the trellis; the following birds crash their wings against the trellis whilst flying towards their freedom. The bird in the upper part of the monument flies towards its freedom.
The monument is placed on a ramp which it shares with a flagpole of 18 meters high.
The text on the rim of the ramp can be translated as follows:
“Memorize the sacrifices that were required
by the recapturing of freedom’s enjoyment
lest we forget the daily effort the
continuous growth of freedom is being claimed
ever and again."
