On 10 April 1945, 21 Dutch citizens were shot at this location, because the German occupiers thought they helped French paratroopers who were dropped during Operation Amherst.

However this monument tells us that 21 Dutchmen are shot it is worth to remember that this is not completely true. A number of them were found later after the war in the forest in the Spier area and that number was added to those already found. That makes a total of 21.
