Labor Camp Danica

Camp Danica was established in April 1941 by the Ustaše-movement. It was also the first Ustaše camp in the Independent State of Croatia. Camp Danica was closed in the autumn of 1941.

The first deportations arrived at the camp on 29 April 1941. Between 3.000 and 5.000 people were deported to Danica. Of those people, 2.500 were imprisoned in the camp. The main camp population existed of Jews (600) and Serbs, who were forced to do slave labour.

In the period of June till July 1941, the Ustaše evacuated Danica and deported the entire camp-population to extermination camps like Jadovno, Stara Gradiška and Jasenovac. In the same period it was ordered that no more prisoners where sent to 'Danica.

The camp today:
In 1981, a memorial in the shape of a gallows was erected on the former site of the camp. A permanent exhibition about Danica is displayed at the city museum of Koprivnica.
