Urquhart's Garret

(Netherlands, the - Guelders - Arnhem)

Because General-Major Roy Urquhart got no information on the progress of his battalions, he decided on Monday 18 September 1944 to go and take a look for himself.

During this march Urquart, Taylor and Cleminson were surrounded by German troops and were forced to take cover in the house of the Derksen family at the Zwarteweg 14. The 3 officers stayed during this crucial period of the battle for more then 12 hours in the garret, until it was safe enough to return to Headquarters in Hotel Hartenstein.
