Stumbling Stones Rodenbachlaan 7

These memorial stones (so called Stolpersteine of stumbling blocks) commemorate:
Elly Julia Heller-Friedmann (born 1885, murdered in Auschwitz on 7-10-1942)
Gerhard Heller (born 1910, murdered in Dörnau on 25-4-1945)

Elly Julia Heller and Gerhard Heller were from Berlin, and Elly had a second son, Fritz, who was Gerhard''s identical twin brother. Fritz managed to leave Germany and come to England, where he married Ruth Cohn, also from Berlin. Soon after coming to England he took on the additional name Peter, since it was still wartime and "Fritz" was a provocatively German-sounding name. Fritz Peter Heller lived until 1992, and Ruth Heller until 2006.

The small copper plaques, in the pavement in front of houses of which the (mostly Jewish) residents were murdered by the Nazis, mention the name, date of birth and place (mostly a concentration camp) and date of death.

In many other cities, mainly in Germany but also in other European countries, the memorials also can be found. There are already many thousands of these plaques and their number is still counting. Almost all Stolpersteine are laid by the German artist himself, Gunter Demnig.
