Crash Location Stirling LJ913

(Netherlands, the - Guelders - Arnhem)

On 18 september 1944 Short Stirling LJ913 of 570 Squadron based at Harwell made a re-supply flight to the Arnhem Battlefields. The crew consisted of:
Flight Lieutenant Dennis Liddle, pilot
Flying officer Leach, navigator
Sergeant Mullan, flight engineer
Flying Officer Joseph Brough, bomb aimer
Flight Sergeant Thomas Hainey, wireless operator
Flight Sergeant Stevens, tail gunner
2 air despatchers

Shortly after the load was dropped on the drop zone, the aircraft got into troubles. Two engines stopped after the aircraft was hit by Flak. The pilot made an emergency landing in a field close to the crossroads of the Deelenseweg and the Koningsweg. A couple of crew members suffered minor injuries. Shortly after the landing, the entire crew was taken POW. The crash location is still visible from the Deelenseweg. There’s no memorial.
