Bastogne Ardennes 44 Museum
(Belgium - Luxembourg - Bastogne)
In 2012, this museum was opened by the owner of the museum in La Roche-en-Ardenne. His collection is so large that the museum had become too small for many years. He was so impressed by the decoration of the museum in Bérisménil, that he asked the owner of this museum to decorate this new museum. This can clearly be seen. The museum is a large diorama with different scenes and a huge amount of details.
During our visit, the basement of the museum was not completely furnished. It is likely it will be ready in the summer of 2012, but it's already worth a visit! As much as possible, open dioramas were used. The few very special pieces are unfortunately displayed behind glass or wire. This is also the reason why photographing in the museum is not allowed.
In the beautiful dioramas, a number of special vehicles can be seen. Including an original Sd.Kfz. 251/10 with 37mm PAK guns, a Ford GPA Amphibious Jeep, a Borgward artillery tractor and Horch officer vehicle. Besides the replica uniforms, where you cannot get around as a museum in such a large diorama, there are some gems to be discovered for the real connoisseurs.
If you are not so interested in all the background stories of the war, but just like to look around, then this museum is ideal. In each diorama are small details. Small children who beg for food to soldiers, including a teddy bear. Minefields, prayer crosses and kennels as well. If you pay attention you can find many beautiful things.
Are you very interested in the war and visited every museum in the region for 3 times? Then visit this for the many special vehicles, equipment and dioramas. The museum will change in the upcoming months a couple of times so you'll discover something new every time!
The museum is located in Bras, Bastogne municipality, on the N84. The N84 is the way from Bastogne to Luxembourg, for example, the direction of Wiltz and Diekirch. Departing from Bastogne, the museum is in front of the Luxembourg border, on the left side of the road. This makes it, for people who visit Bastogne, ideal to combine it with a visit to Diekirch.
Opposite the museum is a large garden center. A little further in the Pommerloch is a huge shopping mall. In this way, the people who are not that interested in World War II can be entertained while you are visiting this museum.
The huge diorama in the basement is not finished yet (May 2012) but will soon be ready. The museum wants to expand the shop in the future and also likes to focus on events and Battlefield Tours. Reason enough to keep an eye on this museum.
If you live nearby and want to help the museum, they are looking for volunteers to help, walk on in and ask for the possibilities!
For current visiting hours, please visit the website of the museum.
