Memorial Jean de Selys Longchamps Brussel

In front of the former Gestapo headquarter is a monument in memory of Jean de Selys Longchamps. He was during the Second World War airmen in the Royal Air Force. On 20th January 1943 a mission started with attacks near Courtrai and Ghent. But De Selys also went alone to Brussels. In Brussels, he attacked the headquarter of the Gestapo. He killed some Gestapo-agents and destroyed the archives. He turned safely back to England. On 16th August 1943 he died after his landing gear destroyed by the German luftwaffe and when he landed, his plane broke in 2.
