Commonwealth War Graves Gembloux

At the Communal Cemetery in Gembloux are four Commonwealth war graves. Three of these graves are from Sergeant (Obs), Leonard Acres, 1250963, Pilot Officer, James Grant, 100206 and Pilot Officer (Pilot), Gordon Geoffrey Watts, 88016. On August 16, 1941 at 2205 departed from Coningsby air base, the Handley Page Hampden AD756 with the mission: a bombardment of the city of Dusseldorf in Germany. The aircraft was shot down over Belgium by the German night-fighter Oberleutnant Karl-Wolfgang Redlich, 1 - NJG 1 and crashed near Gembloux at 0244 on August 17. Of the five crew members, three got killed, they are buried in this cemetery. The other two crew members were taken prisoner of war by the Germans.

Besides these three graves is also a grave of an unknown airman from the Commonwealth. He died on May 11, 1940.
