German War Cemetery Spassk / Spasskij

(Kazakhstan - Spassk)

In Kazakhstan, there were 86 cemeteries where deceased prisoners-of-war from World War II were buried. Of these, only 12 cemeteries remained. Seven are maintained by the German War Grave Commission: Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge.

This cemetery has a size of about 80,000 square meters. There are graves of several nationalities like German, Japanese, Finnish, French and Italian. 5013 German POWs are buried here. At the entrance, there are several memorials for the different nations.

In 1995-1996, the Japanses burials were cremated and their ashes were brought to Japan.
