War Memorial Standdaarbuiten

At the multifunctional Centre 'De Standaard' in Standdaarbuiten this Memorial was added.

There is a Memorial Plaque with the text:
MAY 1940
THEY WHO FELL FOR OUR FREEDOM
F.C.H. LOOIJEN
C.P.P. SCHOONE

About these two names is the following to say:

Franciscus Cornelis Henricus Looijen was a reserve sergeant. He got airborne with two other Dutch fighters on May 10th 1940 at 7:30 in his Fokker D21 from the airport Ruigenhoek in Noordwijk. The trio shot a German Junkers 52 down. Looking for more goals, Francis was at one point followed by five German Messerschmidt 109's. He was unable to escape and was shot, he crashed into the IJsselmeer. F.C.H. Looijen is buried at the Catholic cemetery in Standdaarbuiten.

Cornelis Petrus Paulus Schoone was a soldier, he was killed on May 12th 1940 in St Oedenrode and is buried at the Military cemetery Grebbeberg in Rhenen.

Both men came from Standdaarbuiten.

Also a Plaque with this text is placed on the wall:
On the 50th Anniversary of the liberation of
the Village of Standdaarbuiten from Nazi occupation,
a group of Timberlandwolves of the 104th Infantry
Division have returned to remember those who
lost their lives in the conflict on 3 November 1944.

This tablet is placed this day to remind us all
that our efforts in 1944 were not forgotten and
that the sacrifices made were not in vain. May
the people of The Netherlands continue to have
peace as experienced the past 50 years.

Dedicated October 1994 by
the WWII Veterans of the
104th Infantry Division, U.S. Army

In 2017 a panel was added with information about the liberation of Standdaarbuiten.
